Public is invited to weekly peace vigil

Bestselling author to discuss new book

Bestselling author and former Chicago Tribune columnist Bob Greene will discuss his newest book, And You Know You Should Be Glad, an exploration of the power of friendship, at 1 p.m. March 17 at the Largo Public Library, 120 Central Park Drive.

Greene resigned from the Tribune in 2002 after acknowledging he engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a teenage girl.

His books include Fraternity: A Journey in Search of Five Presidents and Duty: A Father, His Son, and the Man Who Won the War.

Sit back, eat and hear a tale of a fateful trip

Enjoy a potluck dinner at 7 p.m. Jan. 10 at First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin, 455 Scotland St., and hear the story of how a crew sponsored by Odyssey Marine Exploration of Tampa found the wreck of the Civil War ship SS Republic off the coast of Savannah, Ga., with millions of dollars in gold and silver coins.

David Fisher of Odyssey Marine will describe how the crew discovered the ship upright in 1,700 feet of water in 2003.

The ship sank in 1865 on its way to New Orleans with goods, gold and silver to help restore the economy of the South.

People's Law School will start Jan. 11

The first session of the Clearwater Bar Association's annual People's Law School will feature a panel of local judges discussing "The Judicial System from the Judge's Perspective" from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 11 in the teaching auditorium at St. Petersburg College's Clearwater campus, 2465 Drew St.

The People's Law School will meet Thursdays through April. The schedule includes:

- Jan. 18, 7-9 p.m.: How a jury trial really works

- Jan. 25, 7-9 p.m.: Criminal law

- Feb. 1, 7-7:55 p.m.: Condominium law, then from 8:06 to 9 p.m., landlord-tenant law

- Feb. 8, 7-9 p.m.: Independent court system

- Feb. 15, 7-9 p.m.: The Patriot Act

- Feb. 22, 7-9 p.m.: Real estate and real property law

- March 1, 7-9 p.m.: Wills, trusts and estate planning

- March 8, Spring break. No class

- March 15, 7-9 p.m.: Family law

- March 22, 7-7:55 p.m.: Local government law; then from 8:06 to 9 p.m., State of our circuit

- March 29, 7-9 p.m.: Bankruptcy

- April 5, 7-9 p.m.: Construction contracts and mechanic's liens

- April 12, 7-7:55 p.m.: Mediation and arbitration; then from 8:06 to 9 p.m., Small claims court

- April 19, 7-9 p.m.: Contracts and business law

No insurance? Free care is available

The Pinellas County Human Services Department provides free medical care on evenings and weekends to residents of Pinellas County who don't have medical insurance.

Services are provided on the county's Mobile Medical Unit at different sites throughout the county. Evening hours are 4 to 7:30 p.m.

Services available to uninsured residents during evening visits include basic primary care, lab services and prescriptions. The staff can also provide referrals to dental, mental health and substance abuse treatment.

Emergency services are not provided.

Care is provided regardless of income or citizenship status.

Winter Wish kits teach the value of giving

The Volunteer Action Center is offering a Winter Wish program to help children learn about the value of giving.

Winter Wishes are take-home volunteer kits in a bag. Each bag contains seven crafts, with material and directions, that can be completed at home. Once a family has completed the crafts, they are donated to someone in need. Each Winter Wishes bag is $7.

CLEARWATER

Poster art for next Jazz Holiday sought

Organizers of the Clearwater Jazz Holiday, held annually at Coachman Park on the third weekend of October, are seeking art for next year's poster.

The poster design must include blank space that does not interfere with the design for sponsor logos or the weekend's lineup. Submissions should be printed in color, at least 11 by 17 inches. The deadline is Jan. 8.

Send entries to Gary Hallas, Clearwater Jazz Holiday, P.O. Box 7278, Clearwater, FL 33758. Several artists will be selected by Jan. 29, 2007, to receive $200 to develop their ideas.

The final poster design will be chosen by Feb. 23. The prize for the winning design is $2,000.
