Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Holiday no excuse for recklessness, 1/7

Letters to the Editor
Published January 7, 2007

I've lived in Florida for the past 17 years and am an avid target shooter and responsible gun owner. Never once have I used the excuse of New Year's Eve or the Fourth of July to discharge a live round of ammunition into the air! The act in itself is criminal and, in my opinion, just as reckless and dangerous as a drive-by shooting, and those who do it should be prosecuted.

Why isn't there any public awareness about this issue? Perhaps there just aren't enough people getting killed by this act.

Keep up the good work, fine citizens of St. Petersburg. Maybe on the next reckless holiday, it will be you who gets struck down by someone's irresponsible stray round.

Stephen Wallace, St. Petersburg

Tavern is a nuisance Dec. 31, letter

Tavern is an asset to neighborhood

I live right across the street from the Old Northeast Tavern and have never had an issue with noise or the tavern patrons. The restaurant has never received a citation for noise. In deference to the neighbors, the windows and doors are closed at 9 p.m. and any live music concludes around 10.

The tavern serves quality food at reasonable prices, and any music is played at a level low enough for one to have a pleasant dining experience sitting a few feet from the entertainment.

For the most part, the restaurant customers walk from their homes to eat there. The customers are all ages and most evenings you'll see families with small children there. This is a diverse neighborhood and the Old Northeast Tavern has done nothing but improve the quality of life here.

Old Northeast Tavern is a good place for beer and higher quality "bar food". The neighbors need to remember they live in the downtown area of the CITY of St. Petersburg. Noise is what you get when you live in a city. North Pasco is pretty quiet tho.
