TAMPA - When Berkeley Prep and Tampa Prep met this season on Nov. 21, the Bucs won a tight 2-1 contest.
Saturday's rematch - part of the 4th annual Headmasters' Challenge between the private schools - showed how much Berkeley Prep has improved since that early-season victory.
The Bucs (13-2-2) took a 4-0 lead midway through the second half and controlled play, save for the final 10 minutes when Tampa Prep (15-4-2) scored consecutive goals less than three minutes apart to avoid a shutout, as Berkeley Prep posted a 4-2 victory.
"Our team unity is at its peak," said Berkeley assistant coach Jennifer Shannon-Martin, filling in for coach Ken Roberts who was helping his son move to college. "I thought we played very well. Today's game wasn't a high-pressure situation being a non-district game. Any game, if you're having fun, you tend to play better."
Berkeley Prep scored midway through the first half when Taylor Richardson sent a high, arching cross into the box that Taylor Batye corralled and kicked past sprawling Tampa Prep keeper Jordan Hatton.
Richardson, a second-year starter as an eighth-grader and part of a 21-player roster that features just two seniors, made it 2-0 a couple minutes into the second half when she beat Hatton to a ball just outside the box and slotted it past the beaten keeper.
"We're a young team; everybody was basically new at the start of the year," Richardson said. "But we've gotten a lot better as the season's progressed."
Whitney Hang scored on a two-on-one breakaway seven minutes later to put Berkeley Prep up 3-0, and it was 4-0 when Lauren Uichanco's cross glanced off a Tampa Prep defender into the Terrapins' goal.
Tampa Prep sophomore forward Paige Goodwin scored twice in the closing minutes.
"We had moments of good and moments of bad," Tampa Prep coach Pam Smith said. "We haven't played well since the winter break. We've got to get better in the next couple of weeks before districts."
