  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Coming soon: iBrain implants

The five-day Macworld Conference and Expo starts today in San Francisco, and, as usual, Steve Jobs is expected to make some thrilling announcement on new, soon-to-be pervasive technology from Apple. Rumors swirl about the possibility of iTV superpowers to be announced or a partnership with Netflix for downloading movies.

What do you want your Wiki to say?

Speaking of pervasive technology, the founder of Wikipedia will be speaking at 2 p.m. Sunday at the St. Pete Beach Library, 365 73rd Ave. Jimmy Wales may be an international tech hero who changed the way people do research, but he's also a St. Petersburg resident, and he'll be looking for suggestions from the audience on how to enhance Wikipedia's "St. Pete Beach" entry.

Maybe I-I-I won't always love you

If you're in the market for one of Whitney Houston's black velvet bustiers, get on a plane for New Jersey. On Tuesday, 300 pieces of wardrobe, musical equipment and other gear from Houston's 1999 world tour will be auctioned at an Irvington, N.J., warehouse to cover unpaid storage fees. Houston's reps say she's just getting rid of old stuff she doesn't need anymore, which could mean bidders can pick up Bobby Brown for a song.

Doctor, we feel a little faint

The holiday hiatus for network series TV ends this week with some of the most popular shows returning with new episodes, including our two favorite hot doc shows. On House, Tuesday at 9 p.m. on Fox, the eponymous good bad doctor deals with Detective Tritter (boo, hiss), while on Grey's Anatomy, Thursday night at 9 on ABC - slap us, is that Alex and Addison cozying up?

Happy high ratings to all

Three stars of network television series celebrate birthdays this week. On Thursday, Amanda Peet (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) turns 35. And on Saturday, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine) will be 46, and McDreamy Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy) is 41.
