Combo leagues prep for sectionals

This week, local adult and senior Combo Doubles League winners converge on Daytona Beach for the Sectional Combo Championships.
There are six teams in the adult division and five in the senior. Last year, 38 women's teams and 27 men's competed for state bragging rights at the sectional tournament.
This weekend, there will be 41 women's teams and 23 men's in the adult competition and 10 women's and seven men's in the senior.
Teams representing the area at the sectional championships in the adult division include Countryside Country Club 6.5, Safety Harbor Spa 7.5 and St. Petersburg Country Club 8.5 among the women and Feather Sound Country Club 6.5 and McMullen Tennis Complex 7.5 and 8.5 among the men.
Senior teams include Treasure Island Tennis and Yacht Club 6.5 and McMullen 7.5 in the women and Feather Sound 6.5 and St. Petersburg Tennis Center 7.5 men's
Liz Schroeder, captain of the SPCC 8.5 adult women's team, believes her team is ready for sectionals, thanks to the stiff local competition, especially the St. Petersburg Tennis Center.
Joining Schroeder and Cowan are Paula Castoro, Margaret Roset, Turtle Marshall, Susan Hobbs, Lyn Ballinger and Ann Worthington.
On the men's 8.5 adult side is a McMullen-based team with Dave Heeder the captain and Brian Cooper co-captain.
Joining Cooper and Heeder are Greg Burke, Scott Chambers, Bill McMahon, Randy Gibson, Steve Baccich, Chris Riviera, Jon Bean and Bill Radford.
Feather Sound's 6.5 adult and senior teams overlap with Pat Augustine, George Frey, Bob Hicks, David Smith, George Ditzel and Robert Bream on both.
Rounding out Feather Sound's adult team are Peter Hinkle, Terry Sandman and Andrew Hayman. Additional players on Feather Sound's senior team, the 2006 state champion, include Tom Riley, Blane Sherk, Roger Rogers, Phillip Sealund and Tom Schultz.
Second-year captain Victoria Hess feels positive about Treasure Island's 6.5 senior women's team heading to sectionals this week.
Joining Hess on the defending senior 6.5 sectional championship team are Patsy Voigtmann, Kathleen Dabney, Denise Reaves, Elaine Keen, Genean Cole, Jan Hanson, Christine Jones, Susan Barnes and Carol Dunne.
The McMullen-based senior women's 7.5 includes eight of the players that won the sectional title last year when based at Shipwatch Tennis Club.
Hoping to defend the 7.5 senior title, co-captain Elizabeth Proctor will team with Xuan Duong, Gail Pierce, Mickie Gelestor, Dolores Claesson, Lynne Norring, Linda Doty, Vicky Tuller, Cathy McTaggart and captain Nancy Morgan.
Competition begins Friday and concludes Sunday. Adult teams play at the Florida Tennis Center and seniors are at the Ormond Beach Tennis Center.
ALSO THIS WEEKEND: Local clubs host sectional tournaments for 14-and-under singles divisions. Royal Racquet Club 799-3200 is the site for the boys and girls 10, Seminole Lake Tennis Academy (394-1733) boys 12, McMullen Tennis Complex (669-1919) girls 12, Bardmoor Golf and Tennis Club (391-2205) girls 14. Cheval Country Club (813-948-2282) in Lutz is hosting the boys 14 competition.
