Coast Guard appoints senior

Hernando High School senior Jared Korn has received an appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy based on his outstanding academic achievements and leadership skills.

Middle school mystery workshop

Fox Chapel Middle School has a workshop for parents and students in fourth through eighth grades. Watch and take part in the mock filming of a movie called Mysteries in the Middle. Through reading strategy rehearsals on a sound stage participants will discover clues about the mysterious disappearance of a middle school's mascot. It's Feb. 1 and starts with a free dinner from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by the workshop through 8:30 p.m. Free child care for ages 3 through 8. Call 797-7070, ext. 435.

Final Chocachatti orientation

The final orientation meeting for those interested in attending Chocachatti Elementary next year will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the school's cafeteria. At the meeting, applications will be accepted. Those on the waiting list can reapply for next year through Friday. The general lottery will be selected Jan. 26. Call 797-7067.

Free reading workshop

Chocachatti Elementary offers "Families Building Better Readers," a free reading workshop for parents and students in kindergarten through third grade.

The event is Jan. 18 at the school and starts with a free dinner at 5:30 p.m. followed by the workshop from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Free child care for children ages 3 to 4. Call 797-7070, ext. 435.
