Wine and food tasting benefit set for Feb. 8

PALM HARBOR

The Greater Palm Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce's wine and food tasting event, "Evening Extraordinaire," is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa.

The event features cuisine from local restaurants and samples of domestic and foreign wines as well as a silent and a live auction.

Proceeds benefit chamber programs that include economic development efforts, scholarship funds and small business assistance.

Tickets are available through the chamber office, 1151 Nebraska Ave., for $30 or at the door for $35. Call (727) 784-4287.

Bestselling author to discuss new book

Bestselling author and former Chicago Tribune columnist Bob Greene will discuss his newest book, And You Know You Should Be Glad, an exploration of the power of friendship, at 1 p.m. March 17 at the Largo Public Library, 120 Central Park Drive.

Greene resigned from the Tribune in 2002 after acknowledging he engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a teenage girl. His books include Fraternity: A Journey in Search of Five Presidents and Duty: A Father, His Son, and the Man Who Won the War.

Scholarships available from Italy groups

Applications for two $1,000 scholarships are available from the Clearwater chapter of the Order Sons of Italy in America.

The Daughters of Italy Lodge 2825 is offering two $1,000 scholarships. Applicants must be 2007 Florida high school graduates and of Italian descent. To receive an application or for more information, call Daughters of Italy Lodge 2825 scholarship chairwoman Clara Shaw at (727) 785-6428.

Also available are applications for a $1,000 scholarship offered by the Grand Lodge of Florida, Order Sons of Italy in America. Information and applications can be found at www.daughtersofitaly.com.

CLEARWATER

Recyclable electronics accepted Jan. 27

St. Petersburg College's Women on the Way program will accept recyclable electronic items from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 27 at the college's Clearwater campus, 2465 Drew St.

All donated equipment must be working. Items can include desktop and laptop computers, monitors, stereos, radios and cameras, fax machines, cell phones and inkjet and laser cartridges.

The recycling program will not accept small household appliances, copiers or batteries.

The dropoff site will be on the west end of the south parking lot, off Old Coachman Road.

Proceeds will help fund Women on the Way scholarships.
