Current movies recommended by the Times:

1. Notes on a Scandal - Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett earned Golden Globe nominations for this smartly written, intense drama of sexual obsessions.

2. Volver - Penelope Cruz delivers a Golden Globe-nominated performance in Pedro Almodovar's latest strange ode to womanhood.

3. Alpha Dog - A genuinely tough performance by Justin Timberlake is one of the surprises in this mean street yarn inspired by a true story.

4. Children of Men - Director Alfonso Cuaron envisions an infertile future when a revolutionary (Clive Owen, above) protects the world's only pregnant woman.

5. Dreamgirls - A star is born (Jennifer Hudson) and another reborn (Eddie Murphy) in a fine adaptation of the Broadway smash.
