  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

With the Gasparilla Pirate Festival approaching, City Times wants to offer readers an opportunity to wax rhapsodic about Tampa's signature event.

So welcome to the first City Times Gasparilla Limerick Extravaganza. Enter as many times as you like over the next seven days.

We'll publish the top entries in the Jan. 26 pirate-packed Gasparilla edition of City Times. One winner will receive the grand prize of the first and possibly only Annual Gasparilla Limerick Extravaganza Trophy, and we'll throw in some consolation prizes for the runners-up.

If you don't recall the limerick format, here are a couple of examples:

Not everyone parties this day

But many do come out and play

Hundreds of thousands attend

Yo and ho 'til the end

While others say, "No way, Jose."

Gasparilla can be fun, it's true

But just what are women to do?

They get beads for bared chests

But because of those breasts

They can never join Ye Mystic Krewe.

The rules are pretty simple. Keep the bawdiness level well within the "family newspaper" zone - no "Nantucket" rhymes, thanks - and e-mail your entry (subject: "Limerick Contest") to citytimes@sptimes.com by Sunday, Jan. 21.

Oh, and good luck! (That is, good luck coming up with more than one precise rhyme for "Gasparilla.")

Gaspar came from afar; to Tampa's shores and found much more; people who rejoice in history's voice; a place to rest my sails; what a better choice.

a patch on one eye, a beer in one hand; an invasion on Tampa Bay commands. My some beads on my neck; my boots on tight; perhaps a treasure I'll find tonight!
