Redner trying politics again

His seventh attempt will be for the City Council's at-large District 1 seat.

TAMPA - In six campaigns spanning more than 20 years, Joe Redner has asked voters to look past his reputation as Tampa's strip club king and elect him to office. Six times, they've declined.

Undaunted, Render is giving it another try. He filed Thursday to run for the Tampa City Council's at-large District 1 seat.

The Mons Venus owner was emboldened by his strongest showing so far, a November loss to Jim Norman in the Hillsborough County Commission election. He earned 40 percent of the vote, but got 3,784 votes more than Norman in city precincts.

"Some of the stigma that I carry, I think I'm losing some of that," Redner said. "I think the people who thought that I wasn't legitimate because I'm an adult business owner, I'm chipping away at that perception. I (just need to) reach that point that I convince more than 50 percent."

Redner's recent showing was impressive but costly: He spent $173,000 on the county commission campaign. Though his net worth is about $25-million, he said he won't spend anywhere near that for the City Council run.

"I'll put out some signs ... but I'm just going to go out and talk to as many people as I can," he said.

Redner said he picked District 1 because even though incumbent council member Gwen Miller is the current chairwoman and an 11-year veteran of the board, "not a lot of people know who she is."

Miller was elected to the District 1 citywide post in 2003. Before that she served two terms as council member for District 5, which includes Ybor City and the east Tampa area.

Other candidates for the seat are Rick Barcena, Randy Baron, Denise Chavez and Julie Jenkins. The primary election is March 6.

Mike & Jack S, Thank you for your comments. It's refreshing & comforting to see comments from decent men>>Men who don't have a relaxed attitude towards the morally corrupt. God help us if someone like Redner wins and ends up in office.

Why doesn't Redner spend some of his money on helping the people whose lives are ruined by the filth that he peddles. He needs to realize that he doesn't represent the majority. Sicko!

Anyone who would vote for a morally degenerate and bankrupt individual like Joe Redner who got rich by pandering to the lowest, sleazyest, sexual cravings of other degenerates, deserves the disasterous consequences his election would bring.
