AMC closes Tyrone movie theater

ST. PETERSBURG - AMC has closed its Tyrone Square 6 movie theater after a 33-year run, officials said Tuesday. AMC is expected to build a new theater on Tyrone Square Mall property, but specifics were not available early this week. An Old Navy store will go into the vacated space, said Jeni Wilson, a mall spokeswoman. She said it could be open by early summer. The closure came Sunday after showings of such first-run films as Apocalypto, The Good Shepherd and We Are Marshall. It caught some moviegoers by surprise, but Wilson said the move had been in the works for quite awhile. "Over a year," she said. "As part of AMC's business strategy, we continually upgrade the quality of our service," said Andy DiOrio, a corporate spokesman. He referred questions about AMC's plans on the mall property to Simon Property Group, the developer for Tyrone Square. Simon officials were not immediately available Tuesday. Tyrone 6 was among the first businesses to open at the 1972-vintage mall. AMC has approximately 411 theaters with 5,635 screens, according to its Web site. Most of the theaters are in the United States and Canada, with some in Mexico, South America, Europe and Asia.

i'm surprised it didn't close down long ago. between the low life element hanging around the halls and the filth of the theater, it's a surprise anyone visited this disgrace of Tyrone. i hope the new one is monitored more closely.

I am seriously saddened by the closure of this store ,It has been there most of my life. I always look forward to weekend movies, and was shocked by the unforseen closing of this icon of my youth. Needless to say I am looking forward to the reopenin
