North Pinellas events to honor King

LARGO All ages are welcome at a community event honoring the life and ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with children's games, activities and entertainment from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Ulmer Park, 301 W Bay Drive. A group photo of everyone in attendance will be taken at 5 p.m. Proceeds will benefit a scholarship being established in King's memory. Call (727) 587-6740, ext. 5014. SAFETY HARBOR All civic organizations, churches and individuals are invited to participate in Safety Harbor's daylong celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Saturday. The event will begin with a $4-per-person pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. at the Safety Harbor Community Center, 650 Ninth Ave. S. That will be followed by a march down Main Street at 10 a.m., ending at Daisy Douglas Park, 601 Main St., where food, games and entertainment will be featured from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call Joe Cooper at (727) 724-1572. DUNEDIN Monday through Jan. 19 has been declared Diversity in Dunedin Week. Events focusing on the theme "A Community United - Many Paths, One Destination" will include the following: - 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, 550 Laura Lane - "A Celebratory Event" will mark Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The event will include comments by Dunedin's mayor and commission, the Shiloh Choir, the Bethel A.M.E. Choir, guest speakers and the Dunedin High School Steppers. - 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dunedin Public Library, 223 Douglas Ave. - Independent television producer Don Wood will present Impressions of Iraq, a narrative slide presentation of that country and its people. - 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 19, Pioneer Park, downtown Dunedin - A Chinese New Year Celebration will feature martial arts and ethnic food, music and dancing. - 1 to 5 p.m. Jan. 20, Dunedin Community Center, 1920 Pinehurst Road - A diversity festival will feature food, music and dance from many different cultures. CLEARWATER Clearwater's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. events on Monday will start with a leadership breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the North Greenwood Recreation and Aquatic Complex, 900 N Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., followed by a march to Coachman Park at 9:30 a.m. and a rally at the park at 11 a.m. featuring Selma, Ala., Mayor James Perkins Jr. and William Floyd, a member of the San Francisco 49ers 1995 Super Bowl team. Saxophonist Eric Darius will play a concert after the rally. TARPON SPRINGS The city's 12th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration parade will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. The lineup for the parade will start at Ring Avenue and Lemon Street at 10 a.m. The parade will end at Dorsett Park, 500 E Harrison St., where there will be gospel singing, youth activities, opportunities for vendors to sell various items or services, and more.
