Public is invited to weekly peace vigil

Workshop focus will be black and white

Heritage Village, 11909 125th St. N, will serve as a backdrop for students studying black-and-white photography.

Participants will meet from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The class will be taught at the Gulf Coast Museum of Art's photography studio, and the shooting will take place at Heritage Village.

Instructor Ric Savid will teach fundamental aspects of black-and-white image-making with a manual 35mm camera. The class also will cover the wet-process darkroom and discuss aperture, shutter speed and light variations. Savid was a St. Petersburg Times reporter before teaching photography to at-risk youth and adults.

The workshop fee is $100 per person, with a 10 percent discount for members of the Pinellas County Historical Society and Gulf Coast Museum of Art, and a $15 materials fee.

Participants do not need their own cameras because 35mm cameras will be on loan for the workshop.

Guided hikes at Honeymoon Island

The Florida Park Service offers ranger-guided walks of Honeymoon Island at 11 a.m. Saturdays through March.

The island is home to wildlife that includes ospreys, great horned owls and gopher tortoises. Walkers should dress for the weather and might want to bring binoculars and a field guide. Meet the ranger at the head of the nature trail.

The guided hike is free, though park visitors have to pay the regular park entrance fee of $5 per carload from two to eight people, $3 for one person in a car and $1 per person for walkers or cyclists.

Bestselling author to discuss new book

Bestselling author and former Chicago Tribune columnist Bob Greene will discuss his newest book, And You Know You Should Be Glad, an exploration of the power of friendship, at 1 p.m. March 17 at the Largo Public Library, 120 Central Park Drive.

Greene resigned from the Tribune in 2002 after acknowledging he engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a teenage girl. His books include Fraternity: A Journey in Search of Five Presidents and Duty: A Father, His Son, and the Man Who Won the War.
