A 13-year-old Weightman Middle School seventh-grader died when a tire blew on a pickup truck he was riding in on Jan. 5. George Patrick Dalton was one of four occupants in the 2003 Ford Ranger driven by 18-year-old Michael W. Nelson, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. Nelson was southbound on Interstate 75 in Sumter County when the tread separated on the right rear tire, sending the truck into the median, where it overturned. Dalton, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the truck, the report said. Nelson was injured, as well as the other occupants of the truck, Amber N. Rose, 23, and 1-year-old Jeremiah B. Spry. Nelson was wearing a seat belt; Rose was not, the report said. The child was properly restrained.
