Long time Bay Pines physician dies

BAY PINES - Dr. Henry F. Burke, a former chief of staff at Bay Pines VA Health Care System, has died at 81. Dr. Burke, a heart specialist at the VA hospital for 30 years, died Wednesday (Jan. 10, 2007) at Seminole Nursing Pavilion. After about a decade as chief of medical service, he became chief of staff in 1975. He stepped down in the early 1980s but remained on the staff. Until about four years ago, he was active in medicine with the state's Department of Elder Affairs and as a consultant at Bay Pines. Born in Lynn, Mass., he studied at Harvard University and received a medical degree in 1948 from Boston University. In the Korean War, he was a Navy lieutenant. His wife of 32 years, Dorothy Jane (Egan), died in 1982. Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Burke, of Gainesville, Jane Burke, of Sarasota, and Maureen Burke, of St. Petersburg; a son, Michael, of St. Petersburg; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at R. Lee Williams & Son Funeral Home, 3530 49th St. N. A funeral Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Our Lady's Chapel at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association.
