TAMPA - Anthony Wallace, a USF freshman from St. Petersburg, was selected by F.C. Dallas with the ninth pick Friday in the first round of the MLS draft.
Wallace, a member of the under-20 national team, is the third-highest MLS draft pick in USF's history (Mark Chung, sixth, by Kansas City, 1996; Mike Mekelburg, eighth, by Tampa Bay, 1997). He played one season at Lakewood before entering the U.S. residency program in Bradenton. He started all 19 games for USF.
"The residency kids, more and more of them are starting to leave early, or forgo college entirely," said Bulls coach George Kiefer, who had junior Rodrigo Hidalgo leave after last season.
Hidalgo, who considered playing in Europe, is expected to be taken in the supplemental draft.
Maryland's Maurice Edu was taken by Toronto with the top pick Friday.
Two midfielders joined USF's program this week: Armante Marshall, a transfer from Stetson who will have two years of eligibility, and Marshall Schultz, a freshman from Lake Worth.
U.S. national team eyes return to Tampa
The U.S. national men's team might be coming to Tampa for the first time in 12 years.
U.S. Soccer and the Tampa Sports Authority are close to finalizing a deal that will have the team play an international friendly with Ecuador at Raymond James Stadium on March 25. ESPN2 will televise the match. The U.S. national team has played in Tampa Stadium twice, against Costa Rica in 1995 and against Finland in 1990.
