LAND O'LAKES - Out with the old and in with the new has been River Ridge first-year coach John Sedlack's motto since Day 1. Sedlack took over May 30 and has done away with head hanging during games, bringing a don't-quit attitude.
And following Land O'Lakes' 46-45 squeaker over the Royal Knights on Friday, the Gators (14-4) have seen vast improvement.
"(River Ridge) played their butts off," Land O'Lakes coach Dave Puhalski said. "John does a great job with them, and they just outrebounded us, outplayed us, outhustled us. That's not the same team."
The Royal Knights (8-11) used a 16-5 run for a 13-point lead in the first half. But the Gators, without leading scorer Jerome Harrison who sat out due to a violation of team rules, pulled within 26-24.
Land O'Lakes went ahead 44-43 late in the fourth thanks to scoring by senior Dontarrius Thomas, who had a game-high 21 points. Forwards Lance Babcock and James Swanson led River Ridge with 18 and 10 points, respectively.
"We're really intent on changing our image," Sedlack said. ...We still haven't gotten our upset. We still haven't beaten that team that has that nice winning record. Tonight, though, would have been nice."
