Although Dennis Lehane, a Boston native, has a penchant for using his home state as a backdrop for his fiction, he has strong ties to Florida as well. Lehane received his undergraduate degree in 1988 from Eckerd College and his MFA from the creative writing program at Florida International University. Next week, the author of Mystic River, A Drink Before the War and Shutter Island returns to Eckerd as co-director of the fiction program for Writers in Paradise (see story, this page). We caught up with Lehane, who is also a writer for HBO's The Wire, via cell phone as he attempted to fit in a vacation day or two before heading to the shores of Boca Ciega Bay. The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. Do you recommend it? Yes. It is beautiful. I'd recommend it because it is a perfectly controlled narrative.
