Good numbers of kingfish are unusual, but not in these conditions.

What's hot: Good numbers of kingfish are unusual, but with gulf waters in the high 60s there is no reason for them to complete their migration south. Larry Blue fished the South County Reef and in a half-day boated more than 20 kingfish trolling hardware. Grouper, mangrove snappers, scamp and white grunts are feeding in 80 to 130 feet. Tactics: Trolling kingfish-type spoons, broken back boomers and deep-lipped Mirror lures are effective. Kingfish spoons are trolled behind No. 2 and 3 planers or use live bait slow trolled. Grouper fishing starts with frozen sardines on the bottom then live bait. Try a double-hook rig for snapper. Tips: Avoid big ledges and well-known hard-bottom areas. Look for small 2-foot ledges for bigger gags and snappers. Fish in 80 to 85 feet. Larry "Huffy" Hoffman charters out of John's Pass, Treasure Island.
