Seafarers' opinions needed on Loran-C
By TIMES WIRES
Published January 15, 2007
Sailors, take note: the U.S. Departments of Transportation and Homeland Security want to hear from mariners about the fate of the Long Range Navigation System, known as LORAN-C and operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. At question is whether the system should be decommissioned, maintained as-is, or upgraded to an enhanced LORAN system that could be used either as a back-up to the Global Position Satellite system or as a complimentary system to GPS. The deadline for public comments is Feb. 7. To learn how to submit your comments, visit www.navcen.uscg.gov/eLORAN/E6-22421.pdf, or call the U.S. Coast Guard information line toll-free at 1-800-368-5647. Lawn watering to be restricted The city of Clearwater will restrict lawn watering to one day a week for most residents starting Tuesday. The new limit comes as a result of last week's announcement of a severe water shortage by the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Officials said the one-day-per-week restriction applies to the use of water from public and private water utilities, all wells and surface water sources such as ponds and rivers. The city's reclaimed water customers are not affected by this restriction and can water on any day of the week. Users of potable water will remain on their usual one-day-per-week schedule. Residents who use water from private wells or surface water sources can water one day per week on the following schedule: - Addresses ending in even numbers or the letters A through M can water only on Tuesdays. - Addresses ending in odd numbers or the letters N through Z can water only on Sundays.
