Hurricanes defy expectations
To Citrus, "rebuilding" apparently means wrapping up the No. 3 seed.

INVERNESS - Playing the underdog is a role that doesn't bother Citrus. After graduating most of its starters from its two-time defending district championship squad, Citrus expected a rebuilding season. This might not be the same team, but the underclassmen have rallied around lone senior Amber Jordan and her fellow captains, juniors Laura Bourbon and Kaitlyn Clark, to give the 'Canes a third seed going into today's first round of the Class 4A, District 6 tournament. Citrus plays Dunnellon at 6 p.m. today at Belleview. Citrus coach Charlie Gatto had one explanation for Citrus' success 8-3-1 in district play: "They are phenomenal athletes," Gatto said. "They make me look like I know what I'm doing." The players mesh well because they get along, on and off the field. They hang out with each other on the weekends or grab a bite to eat before games. That close-knit approach, plus a pretty deep bench, has paid off as the team has suffered injuries and illness throughout the season. "We've really pulled together," Clark said. Jordan, despite missing some time for sickness, is the team's leader in assists (12). The center/forward also has eight goals. She said the team's versatility has made the difference. When she was out, freshman Paige Verity filled the spot. Freshman Shelby Wells also has stepped up for the 'Canes. "Any situation we get in, we can adapt," Jordan said. That makes the 'Canes dangerous - for this tournament and in the future. "This is supposed to be a rebuilding year, and we're doing really well," Bourbon said. "Next year, we're going to get stronger." Kellie Dixon can be reached at kdixon@sptimes.com or (352) 544-9480.
