Tonya Sota, a starting outside midfielder for the Citrus High School girls soccer team, was airlifted to Shands at the University of Florida at Gainesville on Monday morning after a car accident in Citrus County.

Sota, a sophomore, was listed in fair condition Monday afternoon. The extent of her injuries was unknown.

Sota was on her way to Citrus High for soccer practice. The 'Canes were preparing for today's first round of the Class 4A, District 6 tournament.

Her car collided with another vehicle at State Road 200 and Stokes Ferry at 10 a.m. Monday.

Sota was cut out of the vehicle.

Citrus coach Charlie Gatto said he didn't know what kind of distraction this would be for his squad. But, he added, the 'Canes are a close-knit team.

"We're just going to pray for this kid and hope this works out okay," Gatto said.
