She's still going strong at 104

Nu Thi Nguyen celebrated her 104th birthday Dec. 29, 2006 at East Bay Nursing Center in Clearwater with friends and family. Mrs. Nguyen was born in Vietnam on Dec. 31, 1902 and was a farmer all her life. The oldest of 10 children, she helped raise her brothers and sisters, putting her own life on hold until every one of them had married. According to her grandson, it was only then, at a later age in life, that she married Huong Nguyen, now deceased. At 90, Mrs. Nguyen underwent hip-replacement surgery. Her doctors were skeptical she walk again, but she proved them wrong, walking without the aid of a walker or cane. Mrs. Nguyen, her daughter, son-in-law and grandson immigrated to the United States in 1990. Safety Harbor Fire Rescue honors its own The Safety Harbor Fire Rescue awards were held in December at VFW Post 10093 to recognize outstanding members of the department for their dedication and commitment to the community. The fire officer of the year award went to Joe Accetta, deputy chief training officer, who joined the department in 1981 as a driver/engineer, then advanced to training officer and captain. Fire medic David Lock was named the firefighter of the year. Lock came to the department in 1998. He works as a quality assurance manager for the Office of the Medical Director. Distinguished service awards went to city public information officer Julie Yaeger, deputy Chief Ed Martens, deputy Chief Phil Vozza, firefighter Russ Cortese, deputy Chief Tom Dundon, and volunteers Chuck Russell and Tammy Parker. Special honors also went to four fire rescue members who helped save the life of a Safety Harbor resident in cardiac arrest. Fire medic Tom Peters received a meritorious service award and Capt. Ray Duke and firefighters John Weston and Dave Pacheco each received a unit citation award. For information or an anniversary form, call 727 445-4221.
