Celebrating 100 years of Montessori

Wider Horizons School celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Montessori movement with an open house for the community from 9 to 10 a.m. Feb. 26, 27 and 28. People are invited to see the Montessori method in the classroom and tour the campus. For information, call Dominick Maglio at 686-1934.

Breakfast for dads, reading for all

At Fox Chapel Middle, the "All Pro Dads Breakfast" is at 7 a.m. Friday in the media center. The Jaguar Team "Show What You Know Night" is at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25 in the Tiger Cafe. "Mysteries in the Middle" is a free reading workshop for parents and students, in fourth through eighth grades. The event is Feb. 1, starting with a dinner at 5:30 p.m. and the workshop at 6:30 p.m. Call 797-7070, ext. 435, to register.

Title I, SAC meetings set

West Hernando Middle has its Title I and SAC meetings at 6 p.m. Jan. 22 in the media center. Parents and community members are welcome.

School lottery scheduled

The Challenger school lottery will be drawn Jan. 26. Most available seats are in kindergarten through sixth grade. Students accepted, either through portfolio or lottery, will receive confirmation calls from Challenger or be put on a waiting list for next school year.

Storytime with character

Parrott Middle School will hold its "Literacy Week" Jan. 22-26, and guests will be invited to read to students in class. Staff members, dressed in character, also will read their favorite books aloud.

Essay contest offers $5,000 prize

The Junior Achievement annual essay contest is available online at www.ja.org. High school seniors who take at least one JA class may submit an essay answering an ethical dilemma posted on the Web site. The deadline is March 5. Prize: $5,000 scholarship.

Still few more days to enter contest

Middleton Lawn & Pest Control is accepting applications for its inaugural "What's Bugging You? Youth Achievement Award" competition. Essays must be 500 to 700 words. There are 19 $1,000 prizes for college expenses, also an MP3 player and a certificate of recognition. Winners will be announced in March. The deadline is Jan. 31. Banquet to honor RSVP volunteers

RSVP, a community organization that matches volunteers 55 and older with schools and other organizations, has a volunteer recognition banquet March 22 at Palace Grand. Call 796-8117 for information. RSVP provided Christmas gifts to about 200 children through the Daystar program.
