HERNANDO BEACH The Hernando Beach Club will have its Winter Wonderland dinner-dance Feb. 9 at the club, 3145 Flamingo Blvd. Doors open at 5 p.m.; dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Music will be provided by the duo "Just Us." SPRING HILL Feb. 10 dinner-dance celebrates valentines AmVets Post 24 will have a Valentine's dinner-dance from 5 to 11 p.m. Feb. 10 at the post, 247 Hallcrest Ave. Karaoke music will be provided by Moonlight DJ. A cash bar will be available. The meal will be a choice of chicken cordon bleu or roast beef, with scalloped potatoes, vegetables, rolls, dessert and coffee. Cost is $15 per person. The meal will be catered Japanese food with Filipino desserts. Live music will be provided by the Rhythm N' Motions Band. Tickets are $20 per person, $35 per couple. The attire is semiformal. SPRING HILL Female barbershop singers to perform The Hernando Hills Hi-Lites women's barbershop chorus will present its 14th annual Harmony on Parade show at 2 p.m. Jan. 27 at Stage West Community Playhouse, 8390 Forest Oaks Blvd. The theme will be "Everything Old is New Again." COUNTYWIDE Civil Air Patrol seeks to train new members The Hernando County Civil Air Patrol is recruiting members to train in emergency services, counter-drug operations, homeland defense, cadet programs, air search and rescue, and aerospace education. The patrol is the official auxiliary of the Air Force and is open to those 18 and older. Both air and ground team members are needed, and training is ongoing. The patrol also offers a cadet program for those ages 12 to 18. The local squadron meets at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at 3151 Air Commerce Blvd., in the Airport Industrial Park off Spring Hill Drive. BROOKSVILLE Church center offers free genealogy help The Brooksville Family History Center at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers free genealogy research. Research assistance is provided at the church, 21043 Yontz Road, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays, and 9 a.m. to noon Fridays. SPRING HILL Arbor Day celebration at Botanical Gardens The public is invited to attend an Arbor Day celebration at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Nature Coast Botanical Gardens at 1489 Parker Ave. People attending will learn about trees from a county forester and may participate in workshops on Florida trees. The Spring Hill Photography Club will sponsor a photography contest and will display photos of subjects that represent trees and flowers. There also will be a bonsai demonstration. All Hernando County fifth-grade students are invited to participate in a poster contest. Entertainment will be provided by the Acoustic Guitar Group. NEW PORT RICHEY PHCC sets dates for GED examinations Pasco-Hernando Community College, an official General Educational Development testing center, offers the paper version of the GED exam on the New Port Richey campus, 10230 Ridge Road. The five-subject test covers two days. The test will be offered Thursday and Friday, Feb. 22-23, March 29-30, April 26-27, May 23-24, June 20-21, July 25-26, Aug. 8-9, Sept. 20-21, Oct. 11-12, Nov. 15-16 and Dec. 6-7. COUNTYWIDE Find out all about county government Registration is open for the next session of the County Connection program, which will be from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays through March 15. The sessions will be conducted at various county facilities. County Connection provides participants with a behind-the-scenes look into county government. The sessions cover a series of topics pertaining to county services, such as transportation issues, public safety, the budget, recreation and resources, judicial services, growth and development, and health and utilities services.
