Bobby Bare Jr. was first nominated for a Grammy at age 5 - for a duet he recorded with his famous country singer dad, Bobby Bare.

His dad was close friends with The Giving Tree author Shel Silverstein, who collaborated with Bare Sr. on the 1973 Grammy-nominated album that features the father-son duet, Bobby Bare Sings Lullabies, Legends and Lies.

Bare Jr. has his own family now, a 2-year-old and a 6-month-old, and spends a lot of time on the road. His latest CD, The Longest Meow, an album of alternately raw and psychedelic country rock, was recorded in less than a day.

"We did 16 days of preproduction and rehearsal, and then we went in and started at 10:30 to 11 in the morning and were done at 10:53 p.m. It was fun. We were well-prepared."

His live shows get good reviews. "I try real hard. I always have pretty fearless performers in the band. I have a group of around 20 people to choose from who are all just unbelievable. It's really loud sometimes; it's really quiet sometimes. It's pretty goofy sometimes; it's pretty serious sometimes."

Bobby Bare Jr. performs at 8 p.m. Sunday with the Heathens and the Diviners at New World Brewery, 1313 E Eighth Ave., Ybor City. $8. (813) 248-4969.
