Art
Crafting a broader definition of art

"What's Next" opens at Florida Craftsmen Gallery, 501 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, Friday, and its title has an intriguing challenge. Its roster is a group known for fine art rather than fine craft, and the exhibition should generate discussion about the blurring and merging of distinctions between craft and art. It is curated by Bernice Steinbaum, a luminary on the Miami art scene ever since she moved her eponymous gallery there from New York in 2000. She represents some of the hottest artists in the Miami area and many are represented here, including Edouard Duval-Carrie, whose My Life as a Tree is pictured here, and Maria Brito, who recently won a prestigious $25,000 Painters and Sculptors Grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation. The free opening reception is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Steinbaum will present a curator's talk, "Craft and Art: Everything in Life Can Be Art," at noon Sunday. For the free talk, reservations are recommended because space is limited. (727) 821-7391.
