  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Before the drunken, bead-throwing adult fun begins later this month, the G-rated version, the Gasparilla Children's Parade, heads down Bayshore Boulevard on Saturday, followed by a huge fireworks display.

The pint-sized pirates begin invading at 11 a.m. with a bicycle rodeo (free helmets!), followed by the Preschooler Stroll of decorated wagons and strollers.

Then look up in the sky for the first of two air invasions. The 2 p.m. show features Red Baron Squadron's aerobatic performances and the U.S. Special Operations Command Parachute Team.

Parade time is 3:30-6 p.m., with 109 units and 3,500 kids participating this year, followed by a nighttime air show of planes and pyrotechnics.

At 7, the skies light up in one of the biggest fireworks displays in the country.

A free shuttle runs from downtown Tampa at Franklin and Whiting, with two drop-off locations.

Reserved seats can be purchased for $12 at gasparillaextravaganza.com or call (813) 274-8750.

Gasparilla is an excuse for a party. So what's wrong with that? It's a tradition and brings a lot of focus and fun into our area. I think it's a great time for all. If you don't like it , don't go. Bill

Per the rowdiness. Yes, many do not go because they find it repulsive. Along comes the children's parade and now you can see essentially the same parade in an alcohol free family environment. The best of both. Ahoy!

For everyones information there will be Christian evangelists at both parades getting the true gospel out. That should help keep things clean.

I agree with Kim. a celebration for a person who came to rape and pillage people. Classy.

Kim...... get over yourself. Don't freaking go if you are bothered.

You said it right Ms Wynne. Gasparilla has turned into a drunken , bead-throwing, with fights and damage to property, marching bands and what have you. This organization needs to clean it up.
