Owners preparing to sell Beach Theatre
The Beach Theatre in St. Pete Beach, the longtime home for art films and low-price tickets, will soon be for sale. But the owners say they hope to find a buyer who will maintain its focus on independent and off-beat films. The owners - Raza Chouls and his daughter, Joanna - want to return to their native England in the next year and plan to put the theater (the formal name is the Film Paradiso Beach Theatre) on the market within six months. Dave Bricker, who has managed the single-screen art deco theater for the past nine years, wants to buy it. But first he has to raise the money. "I got no place else to go," he joked. "I should have put out a tin cup that says 'Help Dave Buy the Beach Theatre' years ago."
Orlando feels pain of making rail real
Rail advocates around Tampa Bay are watching Orlando's nascent effort with some envy. But the Orlando Sentinel reports the reality of making rail real. Two public hearings this week drew nearly 500 people, and, the Sentinel reports, "For many, the heavily promoted and celebrated answer to easing congestion on Interstate 4 held only the promise of disrupting their lives." Some houses would have to go to make room for train stations, which might not be air conditioned and where trains might run every two hours at off-peak hours. As one woman said, "Commuter rail is probably an excellent idea, but not in this location."
Miami retooling house party law
Miami Beach is party city, but some house parties have gotten out of hand. Glitzy product launches, real estate pitches, big blowouts with cover charges. The Miami City Commission tried to do something about it and wound up with an ordinance that could mean no more backyard wedding receptions or even birthday parties at private homes, the Miami Herald reports. Opponents fear that the city might shut down a private Super Bowl party where guests brought more than $100 in snacks. That was enough to get the Miami City Commission to send the proposal back for some serious retooling.
