Input sought from marine navigators The U.S. Departments of Transportation and Homeland Security want to hear from mariners about the fate of the Long Range Navigation System, known as LORAN-C and operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. At question is whether the system should be decommissioned, maintained as-is, or upgraded to an enhanced LORAN system that could be used either as a back-up to the Global Position Satellite system or as a complimentary system to GPS. The deadline for public comments is Feb. 7. To learn how to submit your comments, visit www.navcen.uscg.gov/eLORAN/E6-22421.pdf , or call the U.S. Coast Guard information line toll-free at 1-800-368-5647. DUNEDIN Guided hikes at Honeymoon Island The Florida Park Service offers ranger-guided walks of Honeymoon Island at 11 a.m. Saturdays through March. The island is home to wildlife that includes ospreys and gopher tortoises. Walkers should dress for the weather and might want to bring binoculars and a field guide. Meet the ranger at the head of the nature trail. The guided hike is free, though park visitors have to pay the regular park entrance fee of $5 per carload from two to eight people, $3 for one person in a car and $1 per person for walkers or cyclists. If you need assistance to participate fully, call Honeymoon Island State Park at 469-5942. The park is about 6 miles west of U.S. 19, on Curlew Road. Visit www.floridastateparks.org.
