ST. PETERSBURG - So many of Alicia Tergeson's friends showed up after the crash that her parents performed crowd control in her room at Bayfront Medical Center.

Now the St. Petersburg family is mourning the loss of the Largo High School student. Miss Tergeson, 18, died Friday from injuries received when a car struck her Wednesday night.

She was walking east on 47th Avenue N near Third Street when hit by a 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Mary E. Hearn, 54. Police said Hearn swerved but couldn't avoid her.

Brenda Sholley, a family friend, said Miss Tergeson's family, which includes her parents and three siblings, aren't financially prepared for a funeral.

The father, Dwayne, is drawing workers' compensation after an injury suffered while working at Wal-Mart. The mother, Cindi, supervises a night shift at VeriFone, Sholley said.

"We're hoping we can get some help," Sholley said. An Alicia Tergeson Memorial Fund is set up at Wachovia Bank.

Sholley described Miss Tergeson as a "strong-minded girl who loved her friends."
