Pasco-Hernando Community College held its winter commencement Dec. 13 at the New Port Richey campus. This year's winter graduates include many students who have shown determination in earning degrees by balancing classes, work and busy family lives.
Sarah Hull, 42, of Spring Hill, earned her practical nursing certificate. She was president of her nursing class while working part-time as a certified nursing assistant. She will be applying to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses.
Kalyn Butler, 20, of Spring Hill, studied long hours to complete her associate's degree. She plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in animal science at the University of Florida. She wants to go on to veterinary school.
Clubs and Organizations
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office recently graduated the 84th and 85th classes from its Citizens Academy. Participants received certificates of completion from Sheriff Richard Nugent. The academy is designed to give residents a better understanding of law enforcement.
Graduates have the opportunity to ride with a deputy, fly in a helicopter or observe in the communications center.
The Sheriff's Citizen Academy was formed in 1994 and is offered three times a year for those 18 and older.
The classes meet on six consecutive Thursdays, with sessions from 1 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Rotary Club of Brooksville held its annual Golf Tournament at the Brooksville Country Club at Majestic Oaks recently.
Tournament chairman Jerry Sheffield and his fellow Rotarians recruited a record 107 golfers on 27 teams from three counties.
The highlight of the evening was the drawing of the $1,000 cash prize, which was won by a member of the country club's wait staff, Chrissa Wimberly, with a ticket bought for her by a Rotarian.
The net profit from the event was about $8,000, which will benefit the club's charitable trust, which helps fund many organizations in Hernando County.
Bob Jilling, president elect of the Hernando affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, recently received a $1,000 check from Kathy Scanland, manager of Wal-Mart Supercenter located on Commercial Way in Spring Hill.
Recreation and Sports
The GlenLakes Ladies' Golf Association held its annual Christmas Invitational on Dec. 7. One hundred and twenty golfers participated, 60 from GlenLakes and 60 from 15 area golf clubs.
Flight 1 winners included the team of Nancy Anderson, LuAnn Cavanagh, Joyce Engelbrecht and Terri Orr, first place; Linda Wilson, Dottie Haney, Nan O'Connor Roys and Judy Procious, second place; JoAnn Catolos, Nancy Chick, Nancy Duckworth and Barbara Tharp, third place; Shirley Bellflower, Sandy O'Dell, Hazel Vermette and Brenda Ferrell, fourth place; and Barbara Keller, Pat Rhodes, Shirley Young and Sue Smith, fifth place.
Flight 2 winners included the team of Janet Wilkens, Jean Krisher, Nancy Underwood and Elizabeth Berube, first place; Margaret Cleary, Pam Buchanan, Susanne Matthews and Sherry Nevens, second place; M.J. Rice, Lois Emker, Peggy Ostensen and Lari Lyons, third place; Sue Leimbeck, Betty Kreps, Cathy Wright and Gi Keller, fourth place; and Linda Mills, Bobbie Worman, Fran Quillen and Flo Collins, fifth place.
"Closest to the pin" awards were given on all four par three holes. On hole 4, the guest winner was Susanne Matthews; on hole 7, the guest winner was Joan Beasley; on hole 11, the member winner was Barbara Keller, and on hole 16, the member winner was Linda Wilk.
