Two people were killed and three were injured in a Saturday morning car crash on U.S. 301, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Biniyam Maelu, 27, of Tampa was driving south in a Toyota Corolla about 9:30 a.m. when he swerved into the grass median near the intersection of Delaney Creek Boulevard. He overcorrected and lost control of the car, skidding across the median into northbound traffic.

Maelu's car was struck by a Ford Expedition driven by 36-year-old Jonathan H. Gazzo of Brandon, who was traveling with his 7-year-old son, Luk, the Highway Patrol said.

Two of Maelu's passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities weren't releasing one passenger's name because they hadn't reached relatives.

The other passenger, Avlelom Brhane, 33, moved to Tampa from the East African nation of Eritrea a year ago, according to his brother-in-law, Tsegai Fissha.

"He was looking for a better life," he said.

Fissha said he was friends with Maelu and the car's other passenger. The three men were headed to his Tampa home for a visit when the crash occurred, he said.

Maelu and both Gazzos were taken to local hospitals. Luk Gazzo suffered minor injuries.

No charges had been filed Sunday.
