If you've been neglecting that eye appointment, help is on the way. Free vision and glaucoma screenings will be held during a day-long event sponsored by the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind for Low Vision Awareness Day 2007. Vision exhibits will be on display and free hearing screenings will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 2 at St. Michaels Catholic Church, 8014 State Road 52. Call Lighthouse at (727) 815-0303 for information. Survey seeks the best place to work Where is the best place to work in Pasco and Hernando counties? That's what Pasco Hernando Jobs and Education Partnership Regional Board, a nonrofit work force program, is asking area companies. Employers can fill out a 40-question online survey. A consulting firm hired by the work force board will analyze the results to calculate such measurements as turnover rates and benefits packages. In April, winners will be named from three different categories, which are based on number of employees. Employers who wish to participate may contact Ellen Hall at (352) 797-5781, ext. 222, or go to www.career-central.org. Body found after mobile home fire A 57-year-old man was found dead in his bedroom Sunday morning after a fire heavily damaged his mobile home. The body of Frank E. Wakefield was discovered by Pasco County firefighters as they worked to control the flames coming from his home at the Lakewood Travel Park, which is off State Road 52. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but authorities have seen nothing to suggest it was deliberately set, said Fire Marshal Larry Whitten. Neighbors called 911 shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday to report the fire. Wakefield had lived at the park for about five years, said Cristy Simpson, the park manager. Two inmates hurt in jail scuffles Two county jail inmates were injured by fellow detainees in separate incidents this weekend, Pasco sheriff's deputies say. In one case, authorities say, two inmates ganged up on a third Saturday afternoon, hitting and kicking him. The victim, who was transported to the hospital, suffered three broken ribs and required stitches. Inmates Luis Angel Rivera and Christopher Wright were charged with aggravated battery on a detainee. In a separate incident Saturday, deputies say Devin Eric Lamm beat his cellmate, stabbing him in the hand with a pen. The victim in that case suffered cuts, stab wounds, two black eyes and a goose-egg-sized knot on his chest. Lamm was also charged with aggravated battery on a detainee.
