What's hot: Trout have returned to the Pinellas Point area in good numbers.

What's hot: Trout have returned to the Pinellas Point area in good numbers. Fishing in the north county area has been congested with the opening of trout season. Two or three boats are on every spoil island, making it difficult to fish favorite spots. In my favorite spots in the Tierre Verde area, I found trout in good numbers trapped in potholes on the extreme low tides. One school was so aggressive, it was feeding on a school of small whitebaits, creating a frenzy like mackerel. This is a great sign of a trout comeback, after I boated only a dozen or so all of last year in the Pinellas Point area.
Great catch: Don Spees of Indianapolis joined me Friday morning, when fog was so dense you could not see 50 feet in front of you. But it was a great day. We started in water so shallow the flats skiff had a hard time getting to my secret spot. Every flat around us was dry. I push-poled and set us up with a downwind cast into mullet schools. We landed 17 redfish in two hours. Soft plastic jigs outfished live shrimp.
Tips: With fog thick in the morning, my GPS has been the lifesaver.
