  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

All-County ... and All-State

The two most productive offensive players in Pasco County this past season were Ridgewood running back Byronell Arline and Land O'Lakes wide receiver Develin Robinson. So it only made sense that the pair were selected to the Florida Sports Writers Association all-state team over the weekend.

Arline, who led the county in rushing with 1,717 yards and 21 touchdowns while earning the Times' Pasco County Offensive Player of the Year honors, was selected to the Class 4A team. Leading receiver Robinson 43 catches, 876 yards, eight touchdowns was picked for the Class 5A team.

Arline's teammate, linebacker Ben Perry, was selected as an honorable mention at linebacker after leading the county in tackles. For the Class 5A second team, Land O'Lakes' Joe Weatherford was chosen at quarterback, and Wesley Chapel's Vince Chalecki, the Times' Defensive Player of the Year, was named as a linebacker.

The third team had Land O'Lakes defensive back/linebacker Jerome Blyden on it.

Recruiting update

Zephyrhills standout Sederrik Cunningham has given a "soft (oral) commitment" to Division I-AA Furman after visiting over the weekend. Cunningham, who earned Pasco Times' first-team defensive honors, was the Bulldogs' starting quarterback and threw for 1,124 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also considered Middle Tennessee State, but said they ran out of scholarships before he could commit. Cunningham said he will continue to send out highlight tapes.

Help wanted

Want to be a coach? Pasco County always seems to have a few openings. Here are some head coaching openings posted on the Pasco County School's job board: boys swim coach (Ridgewood), girls swim coach (Ridgewood), girls swim coach (Mitchell), girls track and field coach (Zephyrhills), boys tennis coach (Mitchell).

The Hot List

1. Brittany Hahn, River Ridge girls soccer

The last time Hahn allowed a goal, we were coming home to a lit-up house, decorated tree, tall glass of eggnog and the soulful sounds of Donny Hathaway belting out This Christmas. That's 32 days ago, for those of you keeping score at home.

2. Shelby Holley, River Ridge girls soccer

Holley's fifth goal of the season in the 17th minute Friday gave the Royal Knights a 1-0 win over Land O'Lakes and the county its only district champion.

3. Desiree Vizcaino, Wesley Chapel girls basketball

The junior point guard missed a triple-double by one basket and two assists last week; Friday, she fell two assists and one steal short.

4. Jeremy Bilancione, River Ridge boys basketball

The senior guard hadn't attempted more than four free throws in a game since Nov. 25, but Friday made 12-of-13 to help River Ridge snap a four-game losing streak and give coach John Sedlack a 2-0 record against his former team, Central.

By the Numbers

1 Consecutive state playoff berths by the Hudson girls soccer team

15 Consecutive state playoff appearances by Thursday's opponent, Orlando Bishop Moore

The Bishop McLaughlin boys soccer team tries to snag a postseason spot in Tampa when it meets Cambridge, and the Mitchell girls hoopsters tune up for next week's district tournament by taking on Academy of the Holy Names.

Wednesday

Land O'Lakes, Hudson and Mitchell all host boys soccer district semifinals, with the winners all headed to Friday's championship games with a region playoff berth ensured. Mitchell can pull off the biggest upset of the season if it manages to upend Countryside, No. 1 in the country, at 8 p.m.
