The Great St. Pete Homeless Tent Raid

By HOWARD TROXLER

He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

- Luke 3:11

Oh, sure, that's the kind of place I want my city to be - a city where, when kind-hearted people donate tents to the homeless, the city stages a raid and cuts them up.

Good grief!

Did they give each other high fives at City Hall afterward Friday? Did they throw each other a party? Bake a cake? Put up a "Mission Accomplished" banner?

Mayor Rick Baker told a St. Petersburg Times reporter on Monday that he didn't know about the raid in advance.

Ah. So that means someone down the chain of command took the initiative and said:

"Hey, I know! Let's go over and roust the homeless and cut up their tents and make unflattering national news, right after two homeless guys got murdered in our city, and after we forced a charity to shut down an earlier tent city! And, furthermore, let's don't tell the boss!"

(Note: The police officers I have seen on the scene have been professional, patient and compassionate. But this decision was not made by them.)

As for the people who had been living in those tents, here is good news.

They all magically disappeared as soon as St. Petersburg sliced and diced their sleeping quarters.

In fact, I heard one of them say:

"I foolishly believed that I, a worthless bum, could just sponge off you suckers in St. Petersburg, but your firm resolve has thwarted me! Now I and all my friends will be leaving your town."

Not.

The people living in the tents didn't magically disappear afterward, and few if any of them left town, because ...

Because they are, for the most part, us.

Everybody seems to have their own stereotype about "the homeless." And it's usually one size fits all.

To the mayor, the homeless seem to be uncooperative folks who won't take advantage of all the Wonderful Services the government and the private sector offer. What else do Those People want?

To some of the angry citizens I hear from, the homeless are lazy bums. They are the reason we can't walk through a park, or get off an exit ramp without being harassed.

But quite a few of the people in those tents work at minimum-wage jobs, or day labor, trying to afford a place to live. It was a small comfort for them to have a tent to sleep in, a place where other people might watch their stuff.

Some are families. About a fifth of the total homeless population is under 18.

Without a doubt, some of the homeless have problems. Some aren't getting treated for mental illness. Our society's answer for that one is to throw them in jail for a while.

And, yes indeed, for those of us looking to feel smug, if you look hard enough, you can find addicts, or burglars, or even just plain old bums.

But there is no one "homeless" population, and so there is no one solution.

But even if there were, it would not be just rushing over and cutting up tents - good grief! What kind of people are we?

There's a countywide task force and various advocacy groups. Here's one place to start: the Pinellas County Coalition for the Homeless, 5180 62nd Ave. N, Pinellas Park, FL 33781, (727) 528-5762.

I view this story more as the fact that our country is becoming either you are rich or you are poor. This is what happens when you eliminate the middle class with bad trade agreements. Things are only gonna get worse. This is class warfare.

Those who condemn the homeless in response to their city's violent destruction of human shelters make me ashamed to be an American. "Quick to anger, slow to understand. Ignorance and prejudice and fear walk hand in hand." - Rush, "Witch Hunt"

if the homeless had been black, or arab immigrants, the fbi and dept of justice would be investigating the gang of vandals and thugs er, uh, uh, police, for civil rights violations.

If these folks want to camp out, there's ample acreage for them inland in which to camp, and defecate without the public having to witness it while going about their busy "work" days. Here's an idea! Get yourself a poop-scoop & let them stay w/ you!
by Marla 01/23/07 06:32 PM
Two thoughts: 1) I think the Police Benevolent Association should replace the damaged tents. 2) I'll bet that if St Vincent de Paul had put up a fence around their property before the homeless moved in, then it would have been different...

How can any sane person call Howard Troxler a hypocrite? This is a top ranked paper with the finest journalists. He only told the plain unvarnished truth-No excuses for the mayor's actions against the homeless.

Great article. Tent city raised public consicousness and had numerous other positive outcomes. The homeless "policed" themselves. Worked on fulfilling needs. Disappeared from the streets. May the solution continue such group empowerment!

With all due respect for law enforcement personnel, SPPD should get a clue as to why they are so negatively perceived by most residents, rich or poor, black or white.

Different people are homeless are different times. Who is to say the "homeless community" is always the exact same people? It isn't. Journalists and citizens don't need to offer solutions. That's what we pay our major to do.

Maria - It will never be me. I won't live in a tent on someone else's property.
by Georgia 01/23/07 04:01 PM
While we will always have those on drugs and those that refuse work, we are also having a growing population of young people who cannot afford 1st & last mo rent and damage deposits on a minimum wage. This is the result of Clinton's NAFTA signing.

I'd like to know who gave the order to destroy these people's personal tents? Would he like it if someone tore the top off his police cruiser?
by Noone 01/23/07 03:33 PM
There's a right and a wrong way to do everything, clearly Baker chose the wrong way, now St. Pete makes national news in a bad light. What's the next brilliant idea Ricky, we gas them to death? After all, we already threw due process out the window.
by Debbie 01/23/07 03:09 PM
Mr. Baker probably was the one who told the police to go and tear down the homeless's tents but when someone confronted him he just acurled up like a turtle in his shell and was hiding from the truth
by Citizen 01/23/07 02:56 PM
Of course Baker did not know anything about an issue that has been plastered all over the papers. The police obviously acted on their own. Please see Isaiah 3:13-15. We love you Troxy.

Mr Troxler, I don't have to "look hard enough" for criminal homeless - they appear daily in the SPTimes! How much of your salary have you donated to the cause? How much does your employer pay its delivery people? Minimum wage? Hypocrite.
by billy 01/23/07 01:05 PM
Do you believe,the mayor?
by Larry 01/23/07 12:49 PM
Great article, Howard! We, as a society, have so much to learn about compassion and helping those in need. When will we ever learn?
by S 01/23/07 12:46 PM
If somebody put a tent in your front yard without permission, and after you asked them to take it down, you would tear it down too. People do not have the right to setup tents or housing where they please. Stop being hypocrite!
by Brent 01/23/07 12:43 PM
The destruction of personal property is a crime(criminal mischief). The chief and others should be ashamed.I don't often write letters but I was so offended and disturbed by this story that I wrote the chief and copied the mayor and the Times.
by Kent 01/23/07 12:40 PM
What we did to the homeless on Friday echos of downtown Bagdad. We call ourselves humane? That a thinking, educated people cannot come up with better more creative solutions to homelessness is the real problem. Warfare 2007: our homeless solution?
by Janice 01/23/07 12:38 PM
I live very near I-275. These folks traverse my alley to and from wherever it is that they stay. I have,on numerous occasions, seen them counting their wad after a long day of begging by the roadside. I don't shed a tear for the majority of them.
by Jane 01/23/07 12:33 PM
The "Homeless Problem" is a complex one not lending itself to a quick solution--as is obvious in that we have few real solutions in the US never mind St Petersburg. But one thing I know--there is NO excuse for aggressive cutting of "homes" on Fri.
by Don 01/23/07 12:15 PM
Whatever happened to personal responsibility? Be it on the part of Mayor Baker or the "unfortunates".
by Dean 01/23/07 12:13 PM
Steve must be one of those moronic neo-cons. He fits the people to his pre-conceptions. Sad but very predictable. Idiot.
by Gary 01/23/07 12:00 PM
One would think with all the real crime and problems the city faces these big brave policemen could surely find something more constructive to do with their tax paid time. What a dumb way to make the city look like real idiots and heartless boobs.
by Lorna 01/23/07 11:42 AM
Thank you for saying what's been in my heart and mind. I am so ashamed of the way St. Petersburg treats its unfortunates. Does no one have a conscious? The only ones we seem to care about are millionaire developers and condo owners.
by Sal 01/23/07 11:42 AM
Alice, how is it that your "close relative" is still homeless? Why have you and your family not helped out this person? That is where help should start...FAMILIES.I would hazzard a guess that htere is a GOOD reason you have not helped.Say drugs, etc?
by Jody 01/23/07 11:37 AM
Howard you are a sad individual ;I pity the homeless, but I do not think your motives are pure,no solutions.I think that you are using this emotional issue to make Mayor Baker look bad ,with this sensitive issue ;very unethical on your part.Shameful!
by bill 01/23/07 11:36 AM
The only homeless people living on the street in tents are the ones who have refused help. This is a move by select advocates to make more money. Maybe some of you can pitch a tent in your yard for one of them.
by Sherri 01/23/07 11:16 AM
We as a family were pleased to see a journalist that wasn't afraid to write about the treatment of the homeless. Continue the good work! We will be contacting the Coalition to see what we can do to assist them in their goals for the homeless.
by Jan 01/23/07 11:11 AM
This is one way to get St Petersburg on the map. Our mayor has done himself proud by harrassing the poor and hungry. Of course, he knew nothing about the tents being slashed and taken away, leaving the inhabitants totally without any shelter.
by kate 01/23/07 11:06 AM
Shame on the police. Why not find a solution to the problem instead of making more problems and shaming our beautiful city on national television. Shame on You. You & your Boss work for the city, how can you disgrace it so.
by Lisa 01/23/07 11:05 AM
To those who agree with the tent cutting - now what? What are you doing to help these people? You do not think they should be there - where should they go? What is your plan to solve this? It is easy to say "get rid of them". Ok - tell me where?
