Rays payroll shrinks as goodwill is spent
Stu, I thought we were friends.
By JOHN ROMANO
Published January 24, 2007
Stu, I thought we were friends.
You, me and our 3-million or so neighbors.
I thought there was a rapport. I thought we all understood one another. You wanted a major-league franchise and we wanted to see what a real one looked like.
And yet, when I woke up the other morning, I was stunned at what I saw. Times baseball writer Marc Topkin had figured out the Devil Rays payroll for 2007 was going to be in the $24-million range.
In other words, it had gone backward. Again. And the Rays may soon be on their way to having the lowest payroll in the majors. Again.
Look, nobody expected miracles in the second season of the Sternberg era. But I'm pretty sure nobody expected to be calling Vince Naimoli the generous one, either.
I know there are logical explanations. I know there is a plan in place. But I also know, when looking at the bottom line, that this team is not going to be appreciably better in '07, and it could be worse.
After nine seasons of empty promises, that's a little hard to swallow. Yes, the talent base is stronger. And, yes, the club is in a better position financially.
But we're hearing too many rationalizations when it comes to increasing the payroll. So many that it's sounding like excuses instead of explanations.
Sternberg once suggested the payroll would increase 10 to 15 percent each season. Club officials say the increase was meant to be factored in over the long haul, and not as a season-by-season tracking guide.
Okay. So the Rays did not spend wildly last season. And they've taken a step backward this season. That's two years of getting their house in order.
That means, by 2008, the payroll better be around $40-million.
Either that, or we come after Ben Zobrist with cleats high.
Has the honeymoon been short? Absolutely. Do we seem excessively cranky after Sternberg's first 15 months on the job? Perhaps.
But you can blame - and haven't we all - Naimoli for that.
Because, as you know, this isn't our first relationship. The failed marriage with Naimoli left its scars. Our patience is gone, and our hooey meter is sharper.
That means we've already gotten over the feel-good frenzy of Sternberg's arrival. Sure, the free parking was great. And the smiling faces were a nice change. Sternberg's people did a wonderful job of pitching woo and, as a populace on the rebound, we embraced them like giddy teenagers.
No more. We will not fall for diversions, and we will not listen to forget-me-nots. In other words, we're not hopping in the back seat anymore.
Yes, as rants go, this one is stale. I've complained about the payroll, and you've complained about the payroll. Lou Piniella complained so much, they gave him millions of dollars just to shut up.
Even so, the Rays say they will not commit to some artificial payroll figure. That to do so would just be throwing money away in a weak free-agent market.
Yeah? What if their remaining fans applied the same theory to buying tickets?
What if they decide not to commit to some artificial attendance figure? That to do so would just be throwing money away on a weak American League East team?
Rays officials know you're getting antsy, but they say their plan needs time to develop. And their plan does not include overspending on marginal talent.
"We are very proud of what the organization has accomplished over the past 15 months," team president Matt Silverman said. "However, we are not at all satisfied with where we are right now, and we recognize that it will take a great deal more in many areas, including payroll, to get us all where we want to be."
Look, in a theoretical sense, I don't disagree with what the Rays are saying. There weren't many free-agent deals that seemed cost-effective this winter.
But Sternberg's crew arrived in town talking about a new way of approaching this sport, and all we've seen so far is the same old song-and-dance. Slash the payroll, and preach patience. Sorry, but it's not that inventive.
You can dump Aubrey Huff and Julio Lugo and Toby Hall, but eventually you have to add more than prospects and promises.
It's a tricky balancing act, I know. This market hasn't done enough to convince the Rays that spending beyond their means is a wise idea, but the Rays have done little to persuade fans to dig a little deeper into their pockets.
So now, there are ugly whispers outside. Fair or not, people are wondering about Sternberg's intentions. Wondering if the amount of profit has a disproportionate influence on the number of victories.
A year ago, I would have said absolutely not. Today, I'm less emphatic.
And next year?
That's up to you, Stu.

Area baseball fans send a clear message on opening day at the trop with a sell-out: we can do this more often, Mr. Sternberg. Don't insult us with the Naimoli-ism, "We will improve our faulty product once you purchase more of it." Improve the product

I realize now, they will always have a very low payroll. So I'm continuing my season tickets for this year only. If no big improvement this year, I'm done with season tickets. I have told this to management, I don't think they care. Too bad!!!

Being out of area, I catch every Rays game either on MLB Extra Innings on the Dish or on XM radio. Irrespective of the payroll, I would just like to see a competitive, focused Team on the field, EVERY game. Bad fundamentals, too many mental errors

For those of us who go to the games, we had a winning season(41&40). For those of you who watched the games away, you had a loosing season(20&61). If we had won the same on the away we would have been in either 2,3,or 4th in all divisions AL & NL

So many missed opportunities. One draw would have been Sammy Sosa as DH. He is always a HR potential. We need a seasoned First Baseman and a healthy year for the young potential stars. Another starter and closer would be nice too.

the theory of "hit show" defined - bumping up the payroll causes the team to lose more games. not true. proof. 2006 playoff teams payroll. cardinals - over $86 million. tigers - over $82 million. even the twins and A's spent at least $60 million.

Upgrades would be nice, but have to wait one more year.Rays have gathered talented youth at all positions. We have to see how Gomes, Cantu,Iwamura and all the young arms do,they could fill many roles, but 1 or 2 relievers would help. Please keep Rocco.

Amen on the populace wondering about Sternberg's intentions. And this morning we read where the Rays will hire 80 people to entertain people who they say attend games yet aren't really interested in baseball! Spare us the razzle-dazzle at games.

It is starting to appear the Rays are owned by a "Gordon Gecko" type of guy. "Greed is good" was that character's line in WALL STREET. Where's Stu from? Wall Street! Coincidence? Pretty it up (in 5 years)then sell off! How can that NOT be the plan?

Remember last season when we traded away Julio Lugo and they said, who knows maybe he'll be back, they really didn't want to get rid of him. Well, they had a perfect chance to get him back at a good price and did nothing. Just one more example...

St.Pete. is my second home. I wish the fans would get behind the team like the Cardinal fans do. Good or bad, you should support your team. Maybe, if you had a large fan base, the players & owner would have a reason to be a better team

THE RAYS ARE MAKING THE RIGHT MOVES. KEEP/DEVELOP YOUNG TALENT. WHAT'S OUT THERE TO WARRANT BIG $$$? NOTHING I CAN SEE. SOME TEAMS ARE GOING TO BE DISAPPOINTED. HUFF/DREW/LAROSSA ET AL.
SPENDING FOR THE SAKE OF SPENDING DOESN'T GET IT.

Mr. Romano, Sternberg, and Silverman are all correct on future Rays plans. But what happens on the field now with all this potential young talent will need to be reviewed by Mr. Friedman, Hunsicker, and Maddon/Coaches for more improvement$

It doesnt matter how big the payroll is, this team is not ready for the prime market players. Lets just make due with what we have and hope the Manager can spark some interest in this team. Enough with payroll and lets play baseball.

Dukes is a punk and we don't need so many OF's. Instead of talking about moving Baldelli, get Dukes outta here and get a halfway decent starter in return. Almost anyone is better than Jae Seo

what a shortsighted article. this team has never been in better shape. save the money now. sign kazmir sometime this year and young a year after that. then bring in a pitcher or 4, increase the payroll and we have a playoff team . so relax, john.

The Lightning's payroll is over 40 million and they don't have the big national TV revenues that MLB has. By the way, the Lightning out draws the Rays by about 5,000 fans per game Something is very rotten in St. Pete!

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. The $24 million is only what Mark figured the payroll would be, and besides, I'm glad the Rays didn't go out and overpay for one of these mediocre pitchers. They need to try to develop young arms like Detroit.

Why spend big bucks just to spend? Remember Greg Vaugh, Vinny Catilla, Wilson Alvarez? Sign a big bucks contract, then develop "stiffness in the shoulder, groin pull, etc." Why pay $20 mill for a .267 hitter with 15 homers or a 5-8 pitcher?

Smoke and mirrors and a circus atmosphere. This isn't a side show, it's MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL!!!!! This stinks of Vinny Deux!!! Free luxury tax and revenue sharing for product and we get??? They want cart before the horse! No competitive product.....

Pathetic. Teams like TB, Pittsburgh and the like that don't even spend what they take in from revenue sharing should be contracted.

be patient, all will be fine. our position players aren't major league ready yet, and as soon as they are, we will spend on what we really need, SP. until then, it would just be a waste of a contract year and money.

I think the Rays are doing the best they can, given the overpriced and weak free agent market. We would all be crying foul if they had overpaid for a Gil Meche type. The Rays can promote someone from the minors to be below average for less than 55mil

After 9 years of two season tickets I decided not to throw my money away anymore. Bad playing fundamentals and poor management - on the field and elsewhere finally wore me out. Season tickets became a bad investment.
