  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Look for these new items on your grocery store shelves.

Super Bowl fuel

Fisher's honey-cinnamon almonds are chubby nuts generously coated in an addictive sweet mixture. They'll make a nice addition to Super Bowl spreads. A 9-ounce can costs $5.50 at various grocers.

Portion control

The latest item in 100-calorie packaging is three kinds of 100-calorie chocolate bars from Hershey: wafer bars, pretzel bars and dark chocolate bars.

The box of seven individually wrapped treats costs $2.78.

Spicy-sweet start

We liked the spicy sweetness of Post Honey Bunches of Oats with Cinnamon Clusters. Each 3/4-cup serving supplies 2 grams of fiber and 9 grams of whole grains, with 120 calories and 6 grams sugar. Each 14.5-ounce box costs $3.40 to $4 at various grocers.

Isn't this Special?

Kellogg's Special K20 "protein water" is a 16-ounce bottle (a quantity that is normally listed as two servings, not one) that provides 5 grams of protein and 10 percent of daily calcium (from milk products whey protein isolate and calcium lactate) - as well as 8 grams of sugar, two artificial sweeteners and 30 milligrams of sodium. At one discount supermarket, a four-pack (lemon twist, strawberry-kiwi or tropical blend) was $5.99.

Not whole flavor

First there was Sara Lee's Soft & Smooth Made With Whole Grain White bread, which contains whole grain and refined flours and tastes like white bread. Now Sara Lee has introduced an all-whole-wheat bread aimed at white bread purists.

The new loaf indeed tastes as bland as white bread, but each slice supplies 2 grams of fiber and 14 grams of whole grains, nearly 30 percent of a day's recommended amount. A loaf is about $2.70.

Information from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Chicago Tribune and McClatchy-Tribune Newspapers was used in this report.
