St. Petersburg Times photographer Brendan Fitterer won the top award in regional competition of the National Press Photographers Association. Fitterer, 31, based in the Times Pasco offices, is the 2006 Region 6 Photographer of the Year. The region includes the Caribbean, Central and South America, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The award is determined by a series of 12 monthly contests, in which wins result in an annual points total.
The regional winner, in addition to having the most points, must show versatility in the six contest categories. Fitterer has wins in sports, general news, feature single and illustration categories.
Fitterer, a native of Port Jefferson, N.Y., and graduate of the University of Florida, joined the Times in 2000 after working at the Palatka Daily News. In addition to his community photojournalism, Fitterer covers NFL, NASCAR, PGA and NCAA sports. He also covered the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including their 2003 Super Bowl win.
