  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Sky Development Group owes a Naples company nearly $400,000 for property in Citrus, Putnam and Washington counties, according to a ruling from Circuit Judge Carol Falvey this month. CC Development filed a foreclosure suit in late October, claiming Sky failed to make mortgage payments on property. By that time, the company's North Miami Beach headquarters was closed, and its registered agent, Natalia Wolf, was gone. According to the docket for the case, mail sent to Sky Development Group was returned. The suit also names Peter D. Madison, Beverly B. Madison, Clarkson Properties Inc. and Duane Kuck. If the defendants don't pay up, Falvey ruled that the Citrus County clerk's office will auction the property at 11 a.m. Feb. 15 at the Citrus County Courthouse in the jury assembly room, 110 N Apopka Ave., Inverness.

Boil water after water is turned off

The Department of Public Works will turn off water between 9:30 a.m. and noon Monday on the west side of U.S. 19 between Port Paradise Avenue and Sue Lane to relocate a fire hydrant. As a precaution, residents and business owners in that area should boil water for consumption until a biological survey approved by the Department of Environmental Protection shows that the water is safe. At that time, the city will rescind the notice.

Some voters to get verification cards

The county elections office will mail address correction cards to all registered voters who have not voted in the past two general elections and who did not make a request that their registration records be updated during that time. Those who receive an address confirmation card will be asked to verify the information printed on the card, make corrections if needed and return the prepaid postcard. If you receive a card in error, you are asked to return the card to the elections office. For more information or to make an address change by phone, called the elections office at 341-6740 or send an e-mail to vote@elections citrus.fl.us.

Fire destroys home; no one injured

A fire destroyed a single-story home Friday morning. Three people were inside the home when the fire broke out, but no one was injured. According to fire and law enforcement officials, the blaze started in a bedroom of the wood-frame structure at 12900 E Trails End Road. Christine Robinson, 75, went to feed her 9-month-old great-grandson in the bedroom and noticed a space heater in the corner on fire. She grabbed the baby and awoke the baby's mother, 19-year-old Kristy Robinson, who was sleeping in another part of the house. The three hurried outside to safety. It took firefighters several hours to put out the blaze, which started about 8:30 a.m. Fire rescue spokesman Tom McLean said firefighters had to wait for more water to control the blaze.
