Orientation starts Wednesday for center volunteers

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which operates the Chinsegut Nature Center, 23212 Lake Lindsey Road, will conduct a volunteer orientation session from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the center.

Each Wednesday through April 25 after the orientation, a new topic will be presented to volunteers in training during a three- to four-hour session.

Volunteers present educational programs and help with the Chinsegut center's festivals, trail maintenance, invasive nonnative plant control and other projects.

AARP tax preparation assistance to begin

The AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will offer free tax preparation assistance to low- and middle-income taxpayers at various sites throughout Hernando County, starting Thursday through April 13.

Special attention is given to those 60 and older. Both AARP members and nonmembers are welcome. Free electronic filing is available at all sites. Those attending must bring photo ID and Social Security cards (including Social Security cards for all dependents), a copy of last year's tax return, all applicable tax records for 2006 showing income, deductions and credits, and a canceled check with bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit of any refund. All persons required to sign the tax return must be present.

Those not required to file a federal income tax return can get assistance in getting a refund of the federal telephone excise tax. For information, call Joseph Centineo at 683-3769.

The free service is offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the following locations:

Mondays: Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 6193 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill; Christ Lutheran Church, 475 North Ave. W, Brooksville.

Tuesdays: First United Methodist Church, 9344 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill; Brooksville Enrichment Center, 670 S Broad St., Brooksville.

Wednesdays: High Point Community clubhouse, 12249 Clubhouse Road, Brooksville.

Thursdays: First United Methodist Church, 9344 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill; Forest Oaks Villas Clubhouse, 8125 Forest Villa Circle, Spring Hill; Spring Hill Enrichment Center, 11375 Cortez Blvd. (behind Oak Hill Hospital).

Fridays: Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 521, 5214 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill. Brookridge Clubhouse, 8150 Hampton St., Brooksville; Heather Clubhouse, 9199 Nakoma Way, Weeki Wachee.


Yard sale, bake sale set for next weekend

The Tri-County Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will have a yard sale and bake sale from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday and again from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 3 at Fire Station 29, 7725 County Road 476, 8 miles east of U.S. 41.

The sale will include a variety of household items, furniture, games, appliances, books, toys and tools. The bake sale will include homemade baked goods. For information, call 797-9127.
