  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Grill cleanup made easy

It's always grilling season in Florida, but it's never the right time to try to clean grill bars coated with baked-on food. Instead, try Clean BBQ, a disposable liner that fits over the grill bars. Hot air and flames can still surround the food, and fat can drip away. Clean BBQ is made of the same heavy-duty, flame-resistant aluminum foil that's used for disposable cooking pans. Clean BBQ is $9.96 for a 12-pack, available at Home Depot, Wal-Mart and other retailers. Details and online ordering at cleanbbq.com.

Keep the elements out

Spend an hour learning how to weatherize your home against either cold or heat at 11 a.m. Feb. 10 at Home Depot, 10689 Ulmerton Road, Largo. The free workshop is the first of a yearlong monthly series on air conditioning, insulation, lighting and heating, and other home energy-saving topics. Registration: (727) 582-2673.

Ins and outs of condo associations

A free course on condo association operations will be from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 15 at the LaQuinta Inn and Conference Center, 21338 U.S. 19 N, Clearwater. It covers self-management, bidding, maintenance, accounting, legal services and board meetings. The course is presented by the Community Associations Institute, a nonprofit agency that educates and represents owners, professionals and service providers of condo, co-op and homeowner associations. Required registration: (727) 525-0962 or e-mail flcondoeducation@yahoo.com.

Cleaning helpers that aren't

Skip these, says ShopSmart, the female-oriented affiliated publication of Consumer Reports: the Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner and the OxiClean Detergent Toss-N-Go Ball. With the Scrubbing Bubbles, "showers showed no improvement or got worse." The Toss-N-Go Ball "rated dead last in its ability to remove stains such as chocolate ice cream, grass and red lipstick." Out of here.
