Friday night was all about redemption for goalkeeper Josh Zimmer and Sarasota.
After 60 minutes couldn't settle the district championship, the Sailors' game against Durant came down to penalty kicks.
Zimmer had his save against Cecil Clarke called back for moving too early, and Clarke capatilized on the second opportunity. After Sarasota scored on its next opportunity, Zimmer stopped Marcos Garcia for the victory.
"I was kind of frustrated, but that call motivated me even more," Zimmer said. "I caught on to what they were doing, going left-right, left-right. So I guessed right and came up big."
A year ago, the Sailors reached the championship round but fell to Plant City in overtime.
"That (game) was definitely back in the boys' minds. They didn't want to go through that again," Sarasota coach Aaron McFarland said. "It was a great game, it really was. Our goal was to get another home game."
Durant senior Casey Lehman opened up the scoring when he headed in a corner kick from Matt Thomas with 15:57 remaining in the first half.
Sarasota responded when Jon Courtois launched a shot from the top of the box past Chris Parsley just before halftime. The game remained scoreless for the next 60 minutes.
"Earlier in the year, we tied Durant 0-0 and we knew it was going to be a battle," McFarland said. "(Zimmer) had 16 shutouts this season. He's one heck of a player."
