TAMPA - Hillsborough had to work overtime to take home its first district soccer title.
The Terriers (9-5-1) came back from a late two-goal deficit to defeat Chamberlain 3-2 in penalty kicks.
After the Chiefs (11-5) went up 2-0 on a goals by Chris Scallon and Manuel Pena, Hillsborough forward Gerald Johnston took over.
Johnston's first goal came in the 69th minute on a short blast past Chamberlain keeper David Sherman.
Four minutes later, Johnston struck again, banging home a free kick from 30 yards to force overtime.
"I just knew I had to do something to help the team," Johnston said. "I live for moments like this."
Neither team managed to score in overtime, so the teams went to penalty kicks, where both keepers took over.
Both Sherman and Terriers keeper Kyle Vaughn allowed just one goal during each team's first four shooters.
Vaughn then stoned Chamberlain's Dmitriy Glumov before Zoran Prilkeva beat Sherman short side for the winner to complete the comeback.
"We stuck together when we got down, and it feels amazing to win the school's first soccer championship," Johnston said.
