15 applicants to school board reinstated

The shrinking pool of applicants to lead the Hernando County School Board grew a bit this week, after a citizens' committee reinstated 15 of the 29 names they previously eliminated from a pool of 37. Committee chairman Roger Landers said his volunteer panel had erred last week in eliminating some applicants - including four administrators and one teacher from Hernando - who had not specified the size of their school districts on their resumes. The School Board has said it won't consider candidates without a master's degree and at least five years' experience in a district of 10,000 or more students, and the advisory committee on Wednesday eliminated 14 candidates on that basis. The members of the committee will now review the remaining 23 applicants and rank their favorites, Landers said. Among the criteria the committee will use to narrow the field are central office or district leadership experience, an advanced degree in education, Florida experience, and depth or breadth of experience, he said. The committee must recommend six finalists to the School Board by Feb. 9. But board members have made clear they can choose additional candidates for March interviews if they wish.
