Learn How To Make Your Yard Florida-Friendly

About 30 percent of drinking water in Pinellas County is used to irrigate plants, county officials estimate. Overwatering turf grass, according to Utilities Director Pick Talley, weakens the root structure, leaving it more susceptible to insects and disease. And the runoff from landscape carries pollutants to our water sources. With the right Florida-friendly plants in the right spot, you can greatly reduce watering, fertilizing and maintenance in your yard and wildlife will find a home. Doris Heitzmann of the Pinellas County Extension will show you how to design a Florida-friendly landscape from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center, 3940 Keystone Road. The free workshop is recommended for adults. Registration is required. Call (727) 453-6800.

Valentinemaking workshop offered

If you were thinking you need to get to the drugstore for a valentine, the East Lake Community Library has a more personal alternative. The library located at 4125 East Lake Road is offering a valentine-making workshop for children age 3 to adults at 2 p.m. Feb. 10. Call (727) 773-2665.

Kids will be locked in, but it'll be fun

Oldsmar is throwing one big slumber party Friday night for kids 8 to 12. Oldsmar Leisure Services is offering a Youth Lock-In from 8 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday at the Cypress Forest Recreation Center, 650 Pine Ave. N. The night will be filled with games, arts and crafts, movies and other fun activities. But just in case, bring a blanket or sleeping bag and pillow. Pizza, midnight snack, a small breakfast and drinks will be included in the $20 cost with an Oldsmar recreation card, $30 without a recreation card. To register, call (813) 818-0149.

AARP to provide tax return help

If you could use a little help with your 2006 tax return, AARP will once again offer help starting Feb. 6 at the Oldsmar Public Library, 101 State St. W. The hours will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays. The library's phone number is (813) 749-1178.

Artist to discuss her inspiration

Artist and author Elizabeth Indianos will present a multimedia overview of the inspiration driving her art and writings from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Tarpon Springs Library, 138 E Lemon St. She will discuss the creative process across mediums, examining how they interact with and affect the final result. Indianos is an instructor in the Fine Arts Department at St. Petersburg College on the Tarpon Springs campus. Her public art projects include the Gainesville Solar Walk, Tampa's Southern Transportation Plaza and Marion Transit Plaza, and monumental work at Tampa International Airport. Refreshments will be served. Call (727) 944-3042.
