Applications due soon for nursing program

INVERNESS

The Withlacoochee Technical Institute will accept applications for the practical nursing program Feb. 26 to March 9. Applicants must apply in person at Student Services between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and must pass the National League of Nursing exam to qualify. The class begins in August. The cost for the test is $40, due at registration.

WTI also is accepting applications for its cosmetology program scheduled to begin Monday. Class will be held from 7:15 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. Monday through Friday for about 11 months.

BROOKSVILLE

Master tree farmer series begins Feb. 20

The 2007 Master Tree Farmer Satellite and Internet miniseries program will be at 7 p.m. on three consecutive Tuesdays beginning Feb. 20 at the Brooksville USDA Research Station, 22271 Chinsegut Hill Road. The short course is designed for landowners, forestry association members, extension agents, county foresters and others who find themselves dealing with preparing their land for the next owner.

The miniseries is scheduled for a live satellite and Internet feed from the Clemson University campus. Registration before Feb. 6 provides decreased fees: $60 for the course, shared materials fee of $25; add $10 and $5 respectively for registrations received after Feb. 6.

Purple Heart event scheduled for Feb. 17

Combat wounded veterans of Aaron A. Weaver Chapter 776 Military Order of the Purple Heart will conduct their third annual Purple Heart ceremony at 11 a.m. Feb. 17 at the Fallen Heroes Monument, Bicentennial Park. Honorees include Citrus County's fallen heroes and sheriff's Lt. David DeCarlo, who was wounded in the line of duty. The ceremony will commemorate the legacy of the Purple Heart. Power Squadron offers boating safety course

The Crystal River Power Squadron is conducting a two-session boating safety course from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 24 and March 3, 845 NE Third Ave. Topics include Coast Guard and Florida regulations, equipment requirements, rules of the waterway, trailer handling, and other topics to help operate a vessel safely.

Upon successful completion of both sessions participants earn a "Boat Smart Certificate of Completion," which qualifies the holder for the Florida boat operator's certificate. Applications accepted for festival pageants

Applications are being accepted for the Little Miss Strawberry Princess and Miss Strawberry Princess pageants at the 20th annual Strawberry Festival at Floral Park in Floral City. The pageants are scheduled for 9 and 10 a.m. March 3. Contestants must be residents of Citrus County and at least 4 years old but not older than 12 by March 2.

Pick up an application at any of the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce offices at 401 Tompkins St., Inverness; 28 NW U.S. 19, Crystal River; and 3495 S Suncoast Blvd., Homosassa Springs.
