Seniors of the month add to honors

Citrus High School and the Rotary Club of Inverness announce the Rotary seniors of the month for December: Aime Osterhout and Walter Douglas "Doug" Connors. Amie is a member of the National Honor Society, and as a junior was on the Academic Team, Link Crew and in the Beta Club. She is a varsity swim team member, serving as captain her senior year. Awards include the district high points award in swimming, the varsity swimming spirit of the storm award and a $2,500 Mike Hampton Scholarship. Amie has volunteered for Relay for Life and the Florida Humanitarians Walk-a-Thon, has been a hospital volunteer, and has been an assistant in an Eagle Scouting project. She has volunteered and has been a part-time employee of the Dumas veterinary clinic and is presently an extern at Peterson-Smith Equine Hospital in Ocala. Aime plans to attend Auburn University to major in prevet animal sciences. She has a 4.2 weighted grade point average and is the daughter of Merrill and Susan Osterhout of Inverness. Walter was a member of the varsity football team and varsity weightlifting team, serving as captain of both teams. He was selected all-county football player in both 11th and 12th grades, and was chosen as a varsity academic letterman for all four years of high school. He was on the school Academic Team as a junior and is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Key Club, A.I.M. (Achievement in Motion) and LINK Crew. He was awarded a $10,000 Mike Hampton Scholarship. Walter attends Seven Rivers Church and has spent a week on a medical mission to Belize. He is a part-time office aide in the Citrus County schools maintenance office and plans to attend the University of Florida to major in food sciences with a minor in nutritional sciences. After his bachelor's degree, he hopes to work toward becoming a specialized surgeon. Walter has a 4.4 weighted grade point average and is the son of Doug and Linda Connors of Inverness. * * * Crystal River High School and the West Citrus Elks Lodge announce the students of the month for December: Hannah L. Surber and James C. Winborne III. Hannah attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine after being nominated by the late Mike Jones. She is on the Presidential Honor Roll and is a member of the Calculus Club and National Honor Society, of which she is secretary, is a link student in Ministries at Gulf to Lake Church, and is four-year cheerleader and captain of varsity cheerleading. She has been nominated for the Sunshine State Scholars Mathematics and Science competition, is a recipient of the Pirate Navigator Award, and is an academic letterman. Her community service includes more than 150 hours volunteering with the Citizen's Academy of the Sheriff's Office, Camp Rah Rah Cheerleading and the National Honor Society. Hannah plans to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to study aerospace engineering and math. She has a 4.6 grade point average and is the daughter of Darleen and Ronnie Surber of Crystal River. James has been a continuous honor roll student. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Link Crew and the Physics Club. James is starting point guard for the varsity basketball team and has received the African American Citizenship Award multiple times. He has performed 22 hours of community service coaching youth sports and reading to children. James plans to attend college to study accounting and education and continue playing basketball. He has a 3.77 grade point average and is the son of Willetha D. and James C. Winborne Jr. * * * Lecanto High School and the West Citrus Elks Lodge No. 2693 announce the December students of the month: Jamie Gajos and David Rundio. Jamie is a four-year member of the Citrus County Sheriff Explorers Post, a member of National Honor Society, and has served two years in the Social Inclusion Program. She is a member of Operation Shoebox and is senior class president. She is vice president in the National Art Honor Society and is a member of the Character Counts Council and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and has served on the Superintendent's Student Advisory Cabinet. Jamie is a member of the varsity cross country team, varsity girls track and field and the girls soccer team. She has more than 100 hours of community service, much of which was spent volunteering at SALSA Art Camp for children. Jamie was a 2006 Lecanto High delegate to Girls State and was recognized for Best of Show in the high school division at the Inverness Art Festival. She plans to attend Florida State University and study either law enforcement or medicine. Jamie maintains a 4.0 weighted grade point average, and is the daughter of Maryann Gajos of Inverness. David is a member of National Honor Society and the Character Counts Council. He has served in the American Teen Cancer Society, TSA Engineering Club and Venture Crew, acting as president last year and treasurer this year. He has been active in cross country, swimming, track and field and on the crew team. He has completed more than 130 hours of community service and earned his Eagle Scout rank after completion of a 65-foot staircase in the Mutual Mines area of the Withlacoochee State Forest. He was a 2006 Lecanto High delegate to Boys State, received a Top Honors Engineering award and was nominated to the LHS Character Counts Wall of Fame. David plans to pursue a degree in engineering. He maintains a 4.2 weighted grade point and is the son of Pat and Paul Rundio of Hernando.
