Palestinian suicide bomber kills 3 Israelis at resort

EILAT, Israel - A Palestinian suicide bomber killed himself and three Israelis at a bakery Monday in the first such attack inside the country in nine months.

Two radical groups - Islamic Jihad and al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade - claimed responsibility for the attack and said they were trying to end weeks of Palestinian infighting by taking aim at Israel.

Early today, the two warring Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah, announced a cease-fire, though it was unclear whether it related to the bombing. Several earlier truces have broken down.

The bombing in the resort of Eilat was praised by the governing Hamas movement as legitimate resistance - a position that was sure to hurt efforts to end an international economic boycott.

The attack also jeopardized a two-month truce with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Israel's first response came early today when its aircraft bombed a tunnel dug by Palestinians near the Gaza-Israel border. The army said the tunnel was intended for use by militants to attack against Israel.

It was the first suicide bombing in this Red Sea resort of 50,000 at Israel's southern tip near the Jordanian and Egyptian borders.

Two of the victims were the owners of the bakery. A relative identified the third victim as Yisrael Zalmalloa, who emigrated to Israel from Peru. The relative said his parents live in Miami but had no other details.

Islamic Jihad identified the bomber as Mohammed Siksik, 20, from the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya.
